Sign the Climate Conscious Career Pledge!
Pledge Statement:
I pledge to neither pursue nor accept any positions in the fossil fuel industry, which is any company or entity whose primary business is the sourcing, extraction, production, and/or transportation of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, or natural gas*. Additionally, I pledge to the best of my ability to only work for companies that are aligned with goals outlined in the Paris Climate Agreement. I am committed to working towards a just, carbon-free future.
*This includes but is not limited to companies such as BP, Eni, Exxon Mobil, Gazprom, Peabody Energy, Royal Dutch/Chevron, Schlumberger, Shell, TC Energy, Total, or any state-owned coal or oil entities.
Reason for this Pledge:
As the climate crisis worsens, it has become evident that the fossil fuel industry does not hold the best interests of our planet in mind. Despite widespread knowledge of the fossil fuel industry’s culpability in creating and worsening the climate crisis, the MIT administration still refuses to join the many universities that have publicly divested their endowments from fossil fuels. As we continue to push for institutional actions such as divestment, we have the opportunity to unite as a student body against fossil fuel companies and refuse to devote our careers and labor to their efforts. We recognize that not every MIT student is in a position to refuse jobs. However, if those of us who are able to do so withhold our labor from fossil fuels, we will send a powerful message to the fossil fuel industry and the MIT administration that their actions do not align with our values.
